Home treadmill

A home treadmill lets you walk or run whatever the weather, at any time of day, at exactly the pace and gradient you choose. This page is the starting point for everything on Treadmills Club: the main types of treadmill, the brands worth comparing, and how to keep a treadmill running for years.

Why buy a treadmill for home?

  • Convenience: no commute to the gym and no excuses when it is dark or raining.
  • Control: set exact speeds and inclines for intervals, hill walking or steady runs. Our treadmill workouts guide has plans for every level.
  • Lower impact than road running: a cushioned deck is easier on knees and ankles than concrete.
  • Cost over time: a mid-range treadmill can cost less than a few years of gym membership.

Treadmill or something else?

If joint impact is your main concern, compare the options in elliptical vs treadmill. In the UK the same machine is usually called a running machine.

Using and looking after your treadmill

A treadmill is safe and simple to use once you know the basics; read how to use a treadmill safely before your first session. With regular cleaning and belt lubrication most problems never happen, and when they do, our treadmill repair guide covers troubleshooting, belt replacement, motor problems and buying parts.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I put a home treadmill?

On a level, solid floor with about 2 feet of space on each side and 6.5 feet behind it, near a dedicated power socket. A rubber mat protects the floor and reduces noise.

Can I use a treadmill upstairs?

Yes, on a sound floor, but running is noisy for the room below. A thick mat helps, and walking is much quieter than running.

What size treadmill do I need?

Walkers can use a 20″ × 50″–55″ belt. Runners should look for 22″ × 60″. Taller runners benefit most from the extra length.
