Folding Treadmill

Folding treadmill folded upright

A folding treadmill lifts its deck up against the frame, or folds flat, so it takes much less floor space when you are not using it. Folding designs used to mean wobbly decks and weak motors. Today many folding models are solid enough for regular running, but you still need to choose carefully.

Pros and cons of a folding treadmill

ProsCons
Frees up floor space between workoutsUsually less stable than a non-folding frame at the same price
Easier to move on transport wheelsHinges and lift mechanisms are extra parts that can wear
Often cheaper than full-size modelsMany budget folders have short belts and small motors

Types of folding treadmill

  • Vertical fold: the deck lifts up and locks against the console. The most common design. Look for a hydraulic or gas-assisted lift so the deck lowers gently.
  • Flat fold: the console folds down so the treadmill can slide under a bed or sofa. Usually walking-focused. See under-desk treadmills for the smallest versions.
  • Fold-flat running treadmills: a few higher-end models fold flat yet still have running-grade motors and belts.

What to check before you buy

  1. Folded dimensions, not just the in-use footprint. Measure the space you plan to store it in.
  2. Lift assist: a soft-drop hydraulic system makes folding safer and easier.
  3. Motor: 2.0 continuous HP or more for walking, 2.5–3.0 CHP for running. See our treadmill motor guide.
  4. Belt size: 20″ × 55″ minimum for jogging, 22″ × 60″ for running.
  5. Stability: max user weight well above your own, and a frame that does not flex at running speed.
  6. Warranty: long frame and motor warranties suggest a sturdier build.

Our treadmill buying guide covers these specs in more depth, with recommended minimums by budget.

Folding treadmill brands to compare

Most major brands make folding models: NordicTrack, ProForm, Sole (the F-series), Horizon, LifeSpan and Weslo at the budget end. If your space is very small, also compare compact treadmills.

Frequently asked questions

Are folding treadmills good for running?

Mid-range and higher folding treadmills with a 3.0 CHP motor and a 22″ × 60″ belt handle regular running well. Cheap folding models are better suited to walking and light jogging.

How heavy is a folding treadmill to move?

Most weigh 150–300 lb, but transport wheels mean you only tilt and roll them. Folding also does not make a treadmill light enough to carry upstairs alone.

Is it safe to leave a treadmill folded?

Yes, as long as the locking latch engages fully. Keep children away from the deck and remove the safety key when it is not in use.
